Andrew Govan Dantzler majored in art in high school, where he first held a camera.
After serving six years as combat photographer in the United States Marine Corps, he studied at the Germain School of Photography and studied underwater photography at The Florida Institute of Technology.
Dantzler began working as an assistant photographer for a local studio in Huntington, NY. After working as a motion picture and still photographer for Grumman Aircraft for seven years, he left to run his own photo studio on Long Island. From 1974 through 2004 he lived in Sullivan County, NY. There he was a part time instructor of photography for the Adult Education Program and Photography Club at The Delaware Valley Central School (Callicoon, NY) and Sullivan County BOCES. Freelancing as a photo journalist for The River Reporter, his column, Expression profiled local artists using environmental portraiture. He also held workshops on a variety of photographic subjects and was an instructor of photography for Sullivan County Community College, through programs involving The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and The Catskill Art Society. Although he is retired and currently resides in Union Dale, PA, he is still an instructor for Sullivan County BOCES, offering classes in using/understanding Photoshop, as well as basic and digital photography. He is currently active in the field of surrealistic fine arts photography.
He always used standard film and processing for his photographic work; the majority done in black and white. In 1996 he finally decided to try using the computer as an extension of his darkroom to manipulate his photographs and found it a wonderful tool to combine the worlds of real life and fantasy.
After purchasing an Olympus E-10, in Nov. of 2000, he has gone completely digital.
Dantzler strongly believes that photography should be a totally free medium of expression, capable of invoking strong emotional responses from the viewer; many of his ongoing series of surrealistic images are considered controversial.
He is a member of The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and the former Vice President of the Delaware-Hudson Photographers Society.
He also instructs various photography related classes and workshops.
